India defeats Great Britain in Hockey quarterfinals at the Paris Olympics 2024, winning 4-2 on penalties to advance to the semifinals.
Sreejesh made two saves in the shootout to secure India's win, bringing them closer to a second consecutive Olympic medal.
"It was not just a win, it was a statement," said head coach Craig Fulton after the Indian hockey team emerged victorious. They played for more than 40 minutes with just 10 players in a tense quarterfinal match against Great Britain at the Paris Olympics on Sunday.
Key defender Amit Rohidas was given a red card in the 17th minute for hitting an opposition player with his stick. Despite Britain's dominance in ball possession, India managed to play the second half without conceding a goal, saving nine penalty corners in the process.
Sreejesh's exceptional performance in the shootout helped India secure the win. Coach Fulton praised the team's defensive efforts, emphasizing the importance of supporting and covering for one another.
In response to whether it was their toughest assignment, the coach said, "Yeah, for sure." He emphasized the team's ability to rally together when faced with adversity.
Fulton also highlighted the team's unity and tactical efforts, acknowledging that it wasn't a pretty win, especially with only 10 players, but it was a testament to their resilience.
When asked if the red card worked as a blessing in disguise, Fulton stressed that it was not ideal, but they adapted to the situation and executed their tactics effectively.
The coach expressed his satisfaction over the team's progression to the semi-final, emphasizing the need to take it one step at a time.
