Israel-Palestine Conflict: Turkey has blocked Instagram after the platform removed Hamas-related content.
Turkey’s national communications authority has claimed to have blocked access to the social media platform Instagram.
A senior government official accused Instagram of “censoring” information associated with Hamas, and this led to the decision. Without providing a reason, the Communications Authority stated on its website that “instagram.com has been blocked by a decision on the date of 02/08/2024.”
Fahrettin Altun, the country’s Director of Communications, said on Wednesday that the social networking site had blocked posts expressing condolences on the demise of Ismail Haniyeh, the head of the Hamas political bureau.
Altun accused Israel of attempting to utilize covert operations and killings to incite more unrest in the region. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Altun stated, “I also strongly condemn the social media platform Instagram, which prevents people from posting condolences on Haniye’s martyrdom without giving any reason. This is a very clear and obvious attempt at censorship.”
“We will continue to defend freedom of expression against these platforms, which have repeatedly shown that they serve the global system of exploitation and injustice. We will stand by our Palestinian brothers at every opportunity and on every platform. Palestine will be free sooner or later. Israel and its supporters will not be able to prevent this,” he further added.
