Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina quits from her post amid protests, could be heading to India
The Bangladesh Army has reportedly given Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina an ultimatum of 45 minutes to resign from her post, according to sources from Times Now.
Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has resigned from her post and left Dhaka amid violent protests, according to news agency AFP. She is reportedly traveling to India.
"She and her sister have left Ganabhaban, the Prime Minister's official residence, for a safer place," the source told AFP.
She departed from Bangabhaban at around 2:30 pm on Monday on a military helicopter, accompanied by her younger sister, Sheikh Rehana, for a "safer place," ANI reported. She has entered Indian airspace, and the flight is currently above Hazaribagh, as indicated by flightradar24 data.
The Army Chief held a press conference and confirmed her resignation. He stated that an interim government will be formed to run the country and that the country's economy has suffered massively due to violent protests.
"I am taking full responsibility," the general said, dressed in military fatigues and a cap, though it was not immediately clear if he would lead a caretaker government. "We will form an interim government," Waker said in a broadcast on state television, adding that Sheikh Hasina had resigned.
