Stree 2 Review: Despite Flaws, Shraddha Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao's Film Is a Laugh Riot
Stree 2 Movie Review: Bollywood's track record with sequels has been mixed—some have succeeded, while others have fallen short. In the case of Stree 2, starring Shraddha Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao, the stakes were high. The sequel departs from Raj & DK’s original vision as it is now directed by Amar Kaushik and Niren Bhatt, known for their work in Bhediya. The burning question is: does Stree 2 live up to expectations? Let’s find out.
As hinted in the trailer, Stree 2 follows a new demon wreaking havoc in Chanderi. This time, a headless monster is abducting women at night, leading to the return of Stree. Once again, Chanderi is in danger, and Vicky (Rajkummar Rao) and his friends—played by Pankaj Tripathi, Abhishek Banerjee, and Aparshakti Khurana—are on a mission to save the village. They are joined by the enigmatic "Girl With No Name" (Shraddha Kapoor), who warns them that they have only a few days to vanquish the demon, or all will be lost.
With a clear goal, the group embarks on a mission to stop the demon, Sarkata. Along the way, they face various challenges, but tackle each one with humor and determination. Kudos to Amar Kaushik and Niren Bhatt for not only retaining the charm of the original Stree in the first half but also enhancing the humor in several scenes. The duo adeptly incorporates Hollywood pop culture references into the dialogue, including a humorous reference to The Big Bang Theory’s “Soft Kitty, Warm Kitty” and a Mission Impossible theme played on the Veena, which had me in splits.
The first half of the film flows smoothly, but the second half encounters some difficulties. The storyline takes a turn reminiscent of Stranger Things, with women being held captive in an alternate universe accessible only through a Harry Potter-style Platform Nine and Three-Quarters gateway. At this point, the film heavily draws from Western influences, diluting the originality that made the first Stree so special.
