20 Coaches of Sabarmati Express Derail in Kanpur After Engine Hits Object on Track
Kanpur: In the early hours of Saturday, at least 20 coaches of the Sabarmati Express derailed near Govindpuri station in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh. The incident occurred around 2:30 a.m. when Train No. 19168, traveling from Varanasi Junction to Ahmedabad, derailed in a block section between Kanpur and Bhimsen railway station. Fortunately, initial reports indicate that no casualties or injuries have been reported.
According to officials from North Central Railway, the derailment happened after the train struck a boulder. The locomotive's pilot reported that a boulder hit the front portion of the engine, causing significant damage and bending the engine's structure.
In a post on X, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw confirmed the derailment of the Varanasi-Ahmedabad train near Kanpur, attributing the incident to an object placed on the track. "The IB and UP police are investigating the matter. Fortunately, there were no injuries to passengers or staff. Alternative arrangements have been made for the passengers to continue their journey to Ahmedabad," Vaishnaw stated.
The derailment is currently under investigation, and authorities are working to determine the exact cause of the incident and ensure the safety of all passengers involved.
