"Nationwide Strike by Indian Medical Association Begins, Union Health Ministry Announces Safety Measures Committee

A 24-hour nationwide strike called by the Indian Medical Association (IMA) commenced at 6 am today, August 17, and will continue until 6 am on August 18. The strike is a response to the recent rape and murder of a woman doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.

The IMA has confirmed that non-emergency health services will be withdrawn for the duration of the strike, including routine outpatient departments (OPDs) and elective surgeries. However, essential services will remain operational, and casualty departments will be fully staffed.

Following a meeting with the IMA and other doctors' associations, the Union Health Ministry has announced the formation of a committee to recommend measures for ensuring the safety of healthcare professionals across the country.

IMA National President Dr. Asokan described the strike as a "movement for safety" and expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support from doctors nationwide. He emphasized the need for government action on this critical issue, particularly concerning the safety of women, and announced that the IMA will be writing to the Prime Minister to seek a response."
