Kolkata Police Sends Notices to X Users Amid Rape Case Controversy; IMA Demands PM Modi's Intervention
In the aftermath of the brutal rape of a doctor in Kolkata, the Kolkata Police have issued notices to users of the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), prompting criticism from various quarters. Critics argue that the police should be focusing on delivering justice and ensuring safety for women rather than targeting social media users.
The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has initiated a nationwide 24-hour strike in response to the incident. Starting at 6 a.m. today, doctors across the country have joined the strike, which has led to the suspension of all outpatient department (OPD) services and elective surgeries. Essential services and casualty care continue to be provided. The IMA has outlined five key demands for the government, emphasizing the need for improved safety measures for healthcare professionals.
Dr. Asokan, the National President of the IMA, has called for Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene in the situation. “We are asking for a very fundamental right, the right to life... We will be writing to the PM. The time is ripe for his intervention,” Dr. Asokan stated. He expressed hope that the Prime Minister's recent remarks on women's safety would translate into concrete action.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has condemned the crime, describing it as a “big crime” and calling for the death penalty for the accused. She also criticized the vandalism that occurred at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, attributing it to political factions. Protests have also taken place outside AIIMS Delhi, reflecting widespread outrage and demand for justice.
