Swift Action by Cab Driver and Police Officer Saves Woman from Falling Off Atal Setu in Mumbai
In a dramatic rescue on Friday evening, a 57-year-old woman named Reema Mukesh Patel was saved from falling off the Atal Setu, also known as the Mumbai Trans-Harbour Link (MTHL), thanks to the quick response of a cab driver and a police officer. The incident, which occurred around 7 p.m. on the sea bridge in Nhava Sheva, Mumbai, was captured on CCTV and has since gone viral on social media.
While some reports suggest that Patel, a resident of Mulund, attempted to take her own life by jumping off the bridge, others indicate that she lost her balance while sitting on the bridge’s safety barrier and was at risk of falling into the sea.
According to a police official, Patel reportedly panicked and lost her balance after noticing the police approaching her. The Nhava Sheva police are continuing to investigate the incident.
In the viral video, Patel can be seen sitting on the safety barrier of the Atal Setu and throwing an object into the sea before attempting to jump off. Fortunately, a vigilant cab driver and a police officer acted swiftly, pulling her back to safety just in time.
Mumbai Police Commissioner Vivek Phansalkar commended the quick-thinking actions of the on-duty officers in a post on X. “Responding promptly to an attempt to die by suicide at MTHL Atal Setu, the on-duty officials, Lalit Shirsat, Kiran Mahtre, Yash Sonawane, and Mayur Patil, jumped over the railing and rescued the individual, saving her life,” Phansalkar stated.
The prompt intervention of these individuals prevented what could have been a tragic outcome, highlighting the importance of quick response in such critical situations.
