Heavy rains on Friday wreaked havoc in northern Ahmedabad, particularly in Naroda, Memco, and Kotarpur, where approximately 2 inches of rain poured down in just a few hours. Roads, low-lying homes, and shops were inundated, causing significant disruption to residents and businesses.

The downpour, which started around noon, particularly affected the eastern parts of the city. Areas such as Nikol, Ramol-Hathijan, Kathwada, Chandkheda, Ranip, Chandlodia, and Dudheshwar received between 0.5 to 2 inches of rain. Other areas experienced lighter showers that didn’t lead to significant waterlogging.

In the North zone, heavy rainfall caused waterlogging on roads and in low-lying areas, leaving residents and shopkeepers grappling with the flooding. Despite opening three gates at the Vastrapur barrage to manage the water level, the eastern parts of the city were caught off guard by the unexpected heavy rainfall.

Heavy rains lash North, Central Gujarat Meanwhile, other parts of Gujarat also experienced heavy rains. North Gujarat was particularly affected, with nearly 4 inches (100 mm) of rain falling in just two hours from 2 pm to 4 pm. Earlier in the day, Dehgam taluka in Gandhinagar witnessed 80 mm (3.14 inches) of rain between 12 noon and 2 pm. According to data from the State Emergency Operation Centre, between 6 am and 4 pm Friday, Vadgam taluka in Banaskantha received up to 4.4 inches of rain, followed by 3.7 inches in Nadiad and 3.6 inches in Mahudha of Kheda district. A total of 109 talukas received rain during this period. Generally, 50 mm (roughly 2 inches) of rainfall can cause temporary waterlogging if it occurs in a short span.

Heavy rains on Sat-Sun The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted light to moderate rain with occasional heavy showers in Ahmedabad and nearby areas over the next few days. The city recently received 15.4mm of rain, bringing the seasonal total to 560.7mm. From August 23-30, Ahmedabad and surrounding districts, including Gandhinagar, Kheda, Anand, and Aravalli, can expect continued rainfall, with the possibility of heavy to very heavy showers, particularly towards the end of the period.

Rainfall figures for Ahmedabad Here are the rainfall amounts in different areas of Ahmedabad: Naroda and Memco each received 2.32 inches of rain, Kotharpu had 1.77 inches, Nikol and Kathwada both recorded 0.75 inches, Chandkheda had 0.71 inches, Dudheshwar saw 0.67 inches, Ranip received 0.57 inches, Chandlodia recorded 0.55 inches, Ramol had 0.47 inches, and Usmanpura saw 0.41 inches of rain.
