Recently, Tripura has seen a concerning increase in HIV infections, particularly among students. A total of 828 students have tested positive for HIV, and sadly, 47 young lives have been lost. Unlike previous outbreaks, this surge in infections is linked to intravenous drug use rather than sexual transmission.
According to a senior official from the Tripura State AIDS Control Society (TSACS), out of the 828 students who tested positive, 572 are still alive, while 47 have succumbed to the infection. Many of the affected students have left Tripura for higher education in prestigious institutions across the country.
The Tripura AIDS Control Society has identified students from 220 schools and 24 colleges and universities who are involved in injectable drug abuse. Alarmingly, the latest data indicates that five to seven new cases of HIV are being detected daily.
The senior official from TSACS stated, "We have identified 220 schools and 24 colleges and universities where students are found to be addicted to intravenous drug abuse. This information has been gathered from 164 health facilities across the state, encompassing all blocks and subdivisions."
