Leader Kim Jong Un surveys damage and criticizes officials for their failure to prepare and respond to recent heavy rain.

North Korea reported using military helicopters to evacuate over 5,000 people from severe flooding near the Chinese border in the country's northwest.

The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported that leader Kim Jong Un oversaw the military rescues on Sunday, during which residents were evacuated from Sinuiju city and Uiju town.

Heavy rainfall on Saturday had caused a river on the North Korean-Chinese border to exceed a dangerous level and created “a grave crisis”, the agency said.

Kim criticized officials for failing to prepare and respond to the recent heavy rain, despite previous orders to improve the country’s natural disaster measures.
