Robert Downey Jr returns to Marvel as Doctor Doom in Avengers Doomsday.
Marvel Studios has announced the title of the next Avengers film, which will be called "Avengers: Doomsday." They have also revealed that Robert Downey Jr. will be returning to play the villain, Doctor Doom. This announcement appears to be an attempt to use nostalgia to win back fans, as Marvel Studios has faced a series of problems recently.
The original director of "Avengers 5," Destin Daniel Cretton, dropped out in November 2023. Shortly after, Jonathan Majors, who was set to play the next major villain, Kang, was fired by Marvel after being convicted of assaulting his ex-girlfriend. In addition, Marvel's last release, "The Marvels," lost an estimated $237 million at the box office, showing a decline in audience interest in Marvel TV shows and movies.
In an effort to revitalize interest in its franchise, Marvel Studios has announced the return of beloved characters and actors. At the San Diego Comic-Con, it was revealed that the next two films, "Avengers: Doomsday" and "Avengers: Secret Wars," will be directed by the Russo brothers, who directed the last two "Avengers" movies.
The return of Robert Downey Jr., who played Iron Man for over a decade, as the villain Doctor Doom in "Avengers: Doomsday" may bring disillusioned fans back to the franchise. However, some fans have expressed concerns that this move could overshadow Downey Jr.'s final performance in "Avengers Endgame" and affect the legacy of Doctor Doom as one of Marvel's most popular villains.
