Man Arrested for Marrying Over 20 Women to Steal Valuables in Maharashtra
In a shocking case of fraud, a 43-year-old man has been detained by the police in Palghar, Maharashtra, for allegedly marrying over 20 women across India and stealing their valuables. The accused, Firoz Niaz Sheikh, was apprehended from Kalyan in Thane district on July 23 following a complaint by a woman from Nalla Sopara, according to an official statement.
The MBVV police, investigating the complaint, discovered that Sheikh befriended the woman on a matrimonial website, married her, and subsequently took cash, a laptop, and other valuables worth ₹6.5 lakh in October and November 2023. An FIR has been registered under relevant provisions of the Indian Penal Code.
During the investigation, the police recovered a laptop, mobile phones, debit and credit cards, chequebooks, and jewelry from Sheikh. It was revealed that since 2015, Sheikh had targeted divorcees and widows on matrimonial sites, married them, and defrauded them of their possessions in various parts of the country, including Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, and Gujarat.
The case highlights the need for caution while using matrimonial websites and emphasizes the importance of verifying the background of potential partners. The police are continuing their investigation to identify and assist other victims of this fraud.
