The Indian government has designated the National Security Council Secretariat (NSCS) as the primary agency responsible for addressing the escalating threats to cybersecurity. According to a recent notification, the NSCS, led by the Prime Minister, will provide overall coordination and strategic direction for cybersecurity, in addition to supporting the National Security Adviser .
Prior to this decision, cybersecurity was managed by the Cabinet Secretariat. To ensure clarity, specific responsibilities have been allocated to the ministries of telecom, IT, and home affairs. The telecom department will focus on telecom network security, while the IT department will handle cybersecurity, and the home ministry will address cybercrime.
This decision follows extensive government deliberations and draws from the experiences of other countries that have assigned well-defined roles to various government entities to eliminate ambiguities. A source noted that this new allocation will bring greater clarity and coordinated strategies, with the National Security Adviser playing a more significant role.
