ATS and DRI Seize 90 kg of Gold in Paldi Raid – Father-Son Duo Involved in Stock Market and 'Dabba Trading'
Gold was seized from a residential flat belonging to the son of a stock broker. The final tally of the recovered gold is still being determined.
New Delhi: During a raid last night, the Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) of the Gujarat Police, in collaboration with the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), recovered over 90 kilograms of gold suspected to have been smuggled into India, ThePrint has learned.
The gold was confiscated from a residential flat belonging to Megh Shah, the son of stock broker Mahendra Shah, in the Paldi area of Ahmedabad, according to sources from the Gujarat ATS and DRI.
At the time of this report, officials were still determining the final weight of the recovered gold, as the weighing process was ongoing. While they did not specify the exact value of the haul, estimates suggest it to be over Rs 80 crore.
This significant seizure comes amid increased surveillance by intelligence and investigative agencies, including the Gujarat ATS and DRI, following the recent arrest of Kannada actor Ranya Rao at the Bengaluru airport, where she was found with a substantial quantity of gold.
The raid on Megh Shah’s flat in Paldi began after officials with the Gujarat ATS identified the location early Monday morning. They subsequently involved the Ahmedabad zonal unit of the DRI in the operation.
“The DRI was included due to its jurisdiction over high-volume gold smuggling offenses. The raid, which started around noon, continued until Monday evening,” a Gujarat ATS official told ThePrint on the condition of anonymity.
The operation was initiated based on intelligence inputs received by ATS Deputy Superintendent of Police S.L. Chaudhary. Officials emphasized that these inputs were analyzed further to pinpoint the exact location of the targeted flat.
“The DSP received information from his sources indicating that a quantity of smuggled gold was being stored in a high-rise residential building in Ahmedabad. We identified the flat this morning and conducted the raid with a team from the local DRI unit,” another Gujarat ATS official stated.
